Environmentally friendly water-based paints

Environmentally friendly water-based paints are free of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). That paint is water-based is not enough for it to be environmentally friendly. Water-based paints may still contain chemicals that emit VOCs in varying temperatures, even in the paint can or after application on walls.   

Water-based paints that are environmentally friendly should be free from VOCs, and compatible with existing environmental demands. More importantly, environmentally friendly paints should not come at the expense of the quality of the product in terms of opacity, gloss, scrub resistance, or whiteness.

A number of environmental laws and regulations have been developed to reduce the impact of these organic materials. The most well-known regulations in Europe are divided into:

1.Regulations for emissions of volatile organic compounds inside can before application.

2.Regulations for emissions of volatile organic compounds from the paint film after application.

The European regulations specify the percentage of volatile organic compound (VOC) in coatings to be friendly environment:

The influence of emissions of volatile organic compound (VOC) can be inside a container of paint before the application, and after application. The concentration of volatile organic compound (VOC) in coatings is 100 times emissions values on the first day after application, after 7-day emissions concentration decrease to 10 times, emissions influence continues after 28 days in low concentration but it is harmful to human health and the environment.

European countries imposed legal regulations mandatory for emissions of volatile organic compound (VOC) As follows: 

1. European Directive 2004/42/EG

2. French Directive 2011/321

On the other hand, European countries imposed non-mandatory legal for emissions of volatile organic compound (VOC) As follows:

1. Non- mandatory European regulation, “ECO LABEL”

2. Non- mandatory European regulation, “BLUE ENGEL”

3. Non- mandatory European regulation, “TUV LABEL”

Friendly Environment coatings (free emissions of volatile organic compounds), must be in high quality of the main specifications of coatings in terms of:

1. High opacity.

2. Scrub resistance.

3. Good open time period.

4. and resistance to weather conditions.

With these high-quality specifications; these coatings are also not harmful to human health and the environment because of the low percentage of volatile organic compounds release, and they are free of lead, mercury, and devoid of harmful emissions and odor.

TUV SUD Test Standard TM 07

(ISO 16000/9)

Non- mandatory European regulation, TUV LABEL:

Optional European law which is determines the proportion of volatile organic compounds in each type of coatings, so it specifies the proportion of volatile organic materials no more than 300mg / m3 after 72 hours of application.

It also prevents the presence of heavy metals in water-borne paints such as lead, mercury, zinc, etc.

Important requirements for this certificate:

1.Undergo to (EN 13300) standard in wet scrub resistance test.

2.Undergo to (EN 13300) standard in opacity test.

3.Prevents the presence of heavy metals.

4.Concentration of volatile organic compound (VOC) in-Can less than 0.5g/L.

5. Emission limits of volatile organic compounds (VOC) after 24 and 72 hours in a chamber test are less than 300 µg/m3.

Disclaimer;

Quds Paints Industry, LTD has deferred temporarily its affiliation with (TUV SUD Industrie Service ) due to a major EU legislative, which departed working with the current standard regarding VOC compliance ( TUV SUD test standard TM 07 "Issue 06/09" ) to a much authoritarian resolution (TUV SUD test standard TM 07 "Issue 04/18"  ). Such a change made it difficult for key EU suppliers to timely modify accordingly. Hence, Quds Paints continues to oblige itself voluntarily by the previous standard of (TUV SUD test standard TM 07 "Issue 06/09") and the standard (EN 13300) for the expected final product performance and technical outcomes as avowed beforehand and at present.

The binder Vinyl acetate-ethylene, (VAE) is considered the most important component of modern technology in the manufacture of zero-volatile organic compounds emissions coatings because it is devoid of solvents and coalescing agents.
